About The Hairoun Day Centre //

The Hairoun Older Adults Day Centre (H.O.A.D) provides a daily support service and safe environment for older people. For the last 25 years we have provided daycare for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. We really do care about what happens to people when they get older.

We pride ourselves at our multi-cultural environment, where all are made to feel welcome.

Our Story

During the early 1980’s, many factories were closing or making staff redundant.  A group of ladies got together, hired a local community hall (The Multi-Racial Centre),  to encourage mostly Caribbean people, who were no longer working to come together and interact and socialise.  The weekly activities consisted of dominoes, card games, arts and crafts, day trips as well as refreshments; everyone paid a minimal fee.  This proved to be so popular they were able to increase to twice weekly.  More people wanted to join the ‘club’, but the centre was used by other groups so people had to be turned away.

By this time, the ‘club’ had grown to such an extent that a management committee to oversee the running had been formed and a constitution adopted.  They also registered as a charity. The committee worked with the local council and a local housing association and identified funding to enable a purpose built sheltered housing facility which also incorporated a day centre.  This was built specifically for the Caribbean elderly and was officially opened in September 1999.  The aim was for the older people to have access to warden controlled accommodation where they could feel safe and welcome, and a communal facility to enable them to socialise.

Most of the members of the club moved to the new location, but the housing association was not able to fill all the accommodation with just Caribbean tenants, so it was opened to all.  At this time it was felt that the club’s name should be changed to recognise the fact that it was now a fully functioning day centre, accepting service users referred from Social Services, many of whom had complex care needs.

Although called the Caribbean Elderly Hairoun Day Centre, the club has always welcomed everyone irrespective of race, class or nationality.  Even at the Multi-Racial centre, there were service users from Italy, Malta, Spain as well as the UK and of course the Caribbean.  In order to reflect our diverse clientele and to ensure that the wider community are aware that we welcome all nationalities, the name has been changed to Hairoun Older Adults Day Centre.

Most of our members stay with us until we are no longer able to meet their needs, our longest serving member attending for over 25 years, since the inception at the Multi-Racial Centre.

It has been great to have somewhere to meet friends, socialise, and stay connected.

Thank you to everyone at The Hairoun Centre who has made this place a second home for me.
